Table Beneath The Same Sky
The mythical world of Fassianos
This summer, Svenskt Tenn invites visitors to experience a captivating meeting of minds. In the exhibition and collection Beneath the Same Sky, the bold, mythic imagery of Greek artist Alekos Fassianos enters dialogue with the imaginative world of Josef Frank.
Though separated by time, geography, and tradition, both artists shared a belief in the power of creativity to transform everyday life — and in the home as a sanctuary for the senses.

Alekos Fassianos
Alekos Fassianos (1935–2022) was one of Greece’s most revered modern artists, known for his lyrical depictions of mythological themes and archetypal figures. He lived and worked between Athens and Paris, cultivating a singular artistic universe that transcended geography and time. Deeply rooted in Greek cultural heritage, his work was never parochial; rather, it spoke with a voice that resonated universally.
“He was a prolific and devoted creator,” recalls his daughter, Viktoria Fassianou. “Everything he touched became part of his artistic world – from paintings and sculptures to his own clothes, furniture, even the light switches in his home. He believed in making, not buying. Simplicity was a virtue, and the handmade was sacred.”
Viktoria Fassianou“There is a universal hero in Fassianos’ work – someone who lives in our myths and our minds. I believe people today are longing for that kind of figure – poetic, human, eternal.”
Indeed, Fassianos’ universe was entirely his own – an interior world crafted from personal mythology, childhood memories, and encounters with the people and streets of Athens. His inspiration came from wandering the city, conversing with poets, craftsmen and artists, and immersing himself in the iconography of ancient Greece and Byzantine churches. He developed his own colour palette, informed by the women of the Greek islands as they whitewashed their homes, and applied it across various media: oils, watercolours, clay, mosaics, wood, and marble. Some of his recurring motifs, which encapsulate much of his work, include birds, bees, ears of wheat, and scarves — with freedom as the overarching theme.

The collaboration with Svenskt Tenn
“There may be little in common between Sweden and Greece in terms of climate or landscape,” says Fassianou, “but in their artistic philosophies, Josef Frank and Alekos Fassianos are remarkably aligned. Both worked from nature. Both embraced colour, ornament and warmth. And both believed the home should be filled with life.”
This ethos runs throughout the Beneath the Same Sky exhibition, establishing a dialogue between two artistic minds who, despite differing contexts, seemed to dream beneath the same sky. The collaboration also reflects both Svenskt Tenn’s and the Fassianos Estate’s enduring commitment to preserving meaningful artistic legacies.

Preserving the legacy of Fassianos
The Fassianos Estate, led by his family — daughter Viktoria Fassianou and son Nikos Fassianos — honours the artist’s legacy through exhibitions, education, and public engagement, much in the way that Svenskt Tenn preserves the legacy of Estrid Ericson and Josef Frank.
“We’re passionate about sharing his world with new generations,” says Viktoria. “There is a universal hero in Fassianos’ work – someone who lives in our myths and our minds. I believe people today are longing for that kind of figure – poetic, human, eternal.”
